Translation agency rankings: Why “Top 10” lists aren’t always a reliable guide

Every year, we see new lists of the “best” translation companies. Each of those rankings claims to present a true market snapshot. But are the things really that simple? Let’s look a bit deeper.
Where rankings come from:
- Paid participation: The lists include companies that have paid for the service.
- Survey-based placement: participants have to complete forms, which large players sometimes skip due to lack of time or other reasons.
- Limited sample: rankings are shaped from a small group of companies that agreed to take part.
Why the “top” doesn’t always reflect reality:
- Not all strong players got into the ranking: some didn’t apply, others operate on a different business model.
- Important factors like quality, team stability, or depth of expertise may not be evaluated at all.
- Clients often rely more on collaboration experience, recommendations, and portfolios than on a position in a list.
What’s worth evaluating instead:
Service quality, ability to handle urgent projects, niche expertise, process transparency, communication, and reputation.
A number in the “Top 10” is just one factor. Real value doesn’t shine through rankings, but the actual projects and the results clients receive.
It’s better to focus on experience and approach – not just points on a list.
