What Is Relay Interpreting and When Is It Needed
Relay interpreting implies interpretation through an intermediary language.
It is used for rare language combinations or in other situations when engaging an interpreter for the required language pair is impossible. Simply put, it is interpretation through a third language when direct interpretation cannot be performed.
For example, the interpreters from Hindi into Spanish are extremely difficult to find, if they exist at all.
If this is the language pair you need, relay interpreting becomes a practical solution, dividing the process into two stages: from Hindi into English and from English into Spanish. At the same time, listeners hear the speech only in their selected language, just like during standard simultaneous interpreting.
When relay interpreting can be required:
- during international conferences involving multiple languages;
- in humanitarian missions or diplomatic activities;
- during interpreting in international organizations.
Disadvantages of relay interpreting:
- reduced interpreting speed;
- risk of partial loss of meaning;
- higher cost due to additional interpreters and more complex technical setups.
Relay interpreting formats:
- offline: additional interpreter booths are installed at the venue;
- online: platforms such as Zoom support relay interpreting functionality.
